N.India Ganga Basin

Type Locality and Naming

Ujhani Deep-1, Latitude: 28o 00' 03" N, Longitude: 79o 03' 23" E. Drilled depth: 2127.19 m (Shukla, 1973). The top of the formation is at 1270 m and bottom at 2098 m.

Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone. The Formation is composed essentially of quartzitic sandstone, shaly quartzite, silty shale with bands of fissile shale, thin limestone bands and siltstone. The sandstone is light grey and ferruginous. The fissile shale is pink to brown, while the silty shale is grayish brown. Chlorite and pyrite are occasionally noted in sandstone. Intrusives in the form of hypersthene gabbro are observed at the base of the formation in Gandak-1. Thickness: In the type section, these sediments are 828 m thick in Tilhar-1 + 285 m in Ujhani structural-1 +61 m in Kasganj-1, +355 m in Shahjahanpur-1, 660 m in Puranpur-2, and 730 m in Gandak-1.

Sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Underlain by metamorphic rocks of Bahraich Gr. The Lower contact is marked on the first occurrence of metamorphosed rock

Upper contact

Overlain unconformably by Tilhar Fm. The appearance of limestone in the section is taken as upper boundary
